    Construction And Operation

Brush DC Motor were first invented in the 19th century and are one of the simplest types of motors. They were the first type of motor to be widely used because power could be supplied through early DC lighting distribution systems.

An armature (also known as a rotor) consists of one or more insulated wire windings wrapped around a soft iron core. The windings form one or more coils connected to the commutator, which is a cylinder formed by multiple metal contact segments around an electric pivot. The stator surrounds the motor and contains a permanent magnet or electromagnet to generate a magnetic field. The brush is an electrical contact, composed of a soft material such as carbon, which is supported by a spring so that it can be in contact with the commutator segment as the shaft rotates.

When the DC power supply is connected to the brush, the armature coil is energized, turning it into an electromagnet and causing it to rotate so that its north and south poles are aligned with the north and south poles of the stator, respectively. When the commutator rotates, the motion causes the polarity of the current flowing into the armature coil - and the direction of its magnetic field - to reverse. The armature rotates toward the new alignment point, the current reverses again, and the armature continues to rotate.

This way of reversing the current is called mechanical commutation - the mechanical rotation of the shaft provides the feedback needed to switch the polarity of the current. By changing the winding arrangement, a variety of brushless DC motor variants have been developed with different performance characteristics. There are five basic types. The first 4 types use coils in both the stator and rotor (armature), so only electromagnets are used.

The two coils of the series Brushed DC Motor are connected in series. Its speed varies with the load and increases when the load is reduced, but it has a high starting torque, so it is widely used in short time applications such as automotive starters. Compound brushed DC motor is a combination of parallel and series motors, with the characteristics of both. When severe starting conditions are encountered and constant speed is required, compound motors are usually used.

Separately excited Brushed DC Motor have separate rotor and stator power supplies to achieve high stator excitation current and sufficient armature voltage to generate the required stator torque current. These motors can be used when high torque capacity is required at low speeds.

Permanent magnet Brushed DC Motors contain permanent magnets in the stator, thereby eliminating the need for external excitation current. This design is smaller, lighter and more energy efficient than other types of Brushed DC Motors. Designed for low power applications with a maximum power of around 2 HP.
